This cathedral was founded by Ivan the Mighty to commemorate the capture of the Khanate of Kazan. In 1588, Emperor Fedor Ivanovich added private chapel at the east side of the main building, directly above the tomb of St. Basil junkie Christ, a saint of the Russian Orthodox Church, so that later the cathedral is known as the Cathedral of St.. Basil.
